DOVE Mentoring Program

The Dove Mentor, Inc. mentoring program provides a 12-month mentoring relationship for historically underrepresented males (i.e., minority, potential first-generation college, low-income, urban) between the ages of 13-18 who are either, first time offenders, currently on probation, and/or those who are “high-risk” of juvenile delinquency and educational failure. In some instances, DOVE provides services to males between the ages of 19-24, if the organization identifies a male that could benefit from the program.

The mentoring relationships between the mentor and mentee lasts 12 months. However, the participant and mentor can continue the relationship beyond the 12 month period as long as the participant has not reached the age cap.

The mentor and mentee participates in bi-weekly planned activities to strengthen their relationship. Mentors receive continuous training throughout the year, and will participate in monthly meetings to report their respective mentee’s progress.

In addition to the bi-weekly mentor and mentee activities, DOVE also provides other services, which are listed in section two.

 DOVE Mentoring Services

The primary service area, the transformative mentoring relationship, is the core strategy in fulfilling the mission and purpose of the agency through intervention and preventive services.  The supporting service areas in addition to the mentoring relationship, include, but are not limited to:

• Transitional curriculum program

• Tutorial services

• College preparatory assistance & resources

• Job training & internships preparation services

• Professional motivational speakers

• Counseling services

For each participant, DOVE has a plan of action which is based on the goals of the individual.  The plan of action covers the services each participant receives for the year. Each plan of action is reviewed annually to ensure each participant is receiving adequate and proper services.  All plans of actions are signed by the mentee, the parent/guardian, DOVE mentor, the DOVE mentoring services program director, and any other appropriate stakeholder, if appropriate (i.e., guidance counselor).

The end goal of the DOVE Mentoring Program is to increase the likelihood that these young men become productive citizens.  DOVE believes that if we can influence the way these young men think about themselves and the acts they are involved in, they WILL change their lives.  We want each participant to move beyond their current situation, and focus on where, what, and who they want to be.
